About The Township Community Development Volunteer Programme
Program Details
Township Community Development is a non-profit organisation established in 1996. This community based organisation owes its existence to the consolidation of several projects which have been running for several years. Township Community Development is based in Kayamandi just outside of Stellenbosch.
-
Some of the projects Hosted by Township Community Development:
- 1) Crèche support: The main problem with the crèches in Kayamandi are the shortage of staff, unhygienic facilities, no space for the children to play and the mixture of toddlers and babies makes it impossible to follow a specific programme and to do activities to stimulate them. Township Community Development provides support, guidance, training and volunteers to the crèches in Kayamandi.
- 2) Computer Literacy: Aimed at Primary School and High School children to educate them about computer technology and teach them basic PC skills and are presented in the Library in Kayamandi.
- 3) Sport Activities: Primary and High School children get the chance to express themselves through sport. Different types of sport are presented to the children, for example athletics and long distance running, soccer rugby, basketball etc. Through participation in sport activities the children are encouraged to develop healthy and lasting relationships thus steering clear of harmful activities such as involvement in gangs, drugs and alcohol abuse. Their involvement also helps promote a healthy and disciplined lifestyle.
Accommodation
Volunteer accommodation is in shared apartments in the historic town of Stellenbosch. This wonderful vibey town has ample to do and great entertainment with 17 000 students, over 80 restaurants and pubs and being based in the centre of the wine producing area, the recipe is fun, beauty and adventure!
What will you do?
As Township Community Development are also involved in other projects within the Kayamandi township community, volunteers may be required to help where needed or where they have clear skills they can share with local communities.

From time to time volunteers will have the opportunity to assist setting up a new crèche. This could include activities such as assisting with training of the teachers, preparing classrooms by cleaning the facilities, creating learning material etc. - 2) Computer Literacy and teaching: Volunteers teach computer literacy and various computer programme skills to children during the afternoons.
The help of volunteers are also regularly needed to provide in the physical and human resource needs of various schools in the township.
