About The Kayamandi Centre Volunteer Programme
Program Details
The Kayamandi Centre started in 2003 with a commitment to caring for orphans through sponsorship using a home-based care model. Today they are helping over 100 orphaned and abandoned children with sponsorships that assist them with food, school fees, school uniforms, school stationary, clothes, and medical care.
Presently, volunteers help seek to meet the needs in the community through a holistic approach and not merely meeting financial needs. The goal is to uplift and empower the community of Kayamandi Township. They seek to do this by teaching and equipping the children, youth, and adults who come to their centre with academic tutoring, life skills, job skills, and Christian spiritual development. The head organisation is a Christian based organisation and all of their staff lives by Christian values. They however operate an equal opportunity centre.
There is a large need for help in the after school learning centre as the academic system in the public schools has deteriorated. Most of the Teachers are expected to teach a class of as many as 65 students, both primary and high school grades. As a result, many children are left behind with little hope of ever catching up academically. Children can come to the centre to receive tutoring in a wide variety of academic subjects where all grades from 1-12 are tutored on a daily basis. Dramatic improvements have been noticed in the children who have attended the centre over the past two year, compared to those who do not receive additional academic help.
Accommodation
Volunteer accommodation is in shared apartments in the historic town of Stellenbosch. This wonderful vibey town has ample to do and great entertainment with 17 000 students, over 80 restaurants and pubs and being based in the centre of the wine producing area, the recipe is fun, beauty and adventure!
What will you do?
Volunteers will work under the supervision of the local staff. Kayamandi Centre operates a large number of projects and work needs for the different projects vary on a regular basis. Volunteers are therefore requested to be flexible in the activities in which they will participate. There are however a few main areas where help is greatly needed:
- Learning Centre - based on the expertise of the volunteer, academic tutoring is in great demand
- Assisting Crèche staff during the morning in the Kayamandi Baptist Crèche
- Feeding scheme - helping to prepare, serve, and clean up the food for the children
- General help around the office - may include cleaning, painting, packing away supplies, administrative duties
- The Arts - based on the expertise of the volunteer. The Kayamandi performing arts group, drama group, and art class could benefit from the help of experts in these creative fields.
